The first time you read lifestyle profiles, it can feel like a new language. Abbreviations, insider words and phrases that mean something slightly different from what you would expect. This glossary explains the terms you will see most often on UK profiles — so you know what people mean, and can say clearly what you want yourself.

The basics

  • The lifestyle — the umbrella term for swinging and related forms of consensual non-monogamy. "Are you in the lifestyle?" simply means "are you open to this?".
  • Swingers — couples (and sometimes singles) who, with mutual agreement, meet other people for intimacy. Usually the emotional relationship stays within the couple.
  • Open relationship — a relationship in which partners agree that intimate contacts with others are allowed. The rules vary from couple to couple.
  • Polyamory — having more than one romantic relationship at the same time, with everyone's knowledge and consent. The focus is on feelings, not only on intimacy.
  • Ethical non-monogamy (ENM) — a broad term for all of the above: non-exclusive relationships based on honesty and consent.

Levels of play

These terms describe how far a couple is comfortable going. They are not stages you are expected to move through — many people stay at one level for years.

  • Soft swap — intimacy with other people, but not full sex. Exactly where the line is differs between couples, so it is always worth asking.
  • Full swap — partners have full sex with others.
  • Same room — everything happens in the same room as your partner. Many couples start this way because it feels safer.
  • Separate rooms — partners are in different rooms. This needs a lot of trust and is usually something couples agree on later.
  • Watching / voyeur — some people enjoy simply watching, without taking part. In clubs, watching is only acceptable where it is welcome.
  • Exhibitionist — someone who enjoys being watched.

People and profile types

  • MF couple — a man and a woman. FF and MM stand for two women or two men.
  • Single male / single female — someone on their own. You will also see "solo" used.
  • Unicorn — a single bisexual woman who meets couples. The term is often used jokingly because such meetings are rarer than many couples hope.
  • Bi / bi-curious — bisexual, or curious about it. On profiles, this usually refers to the female partner, but not always.
  • Newbies — people new to the lifestyle. Many profiles say "newbies welcome".

Words you will see in messages

  • Meet and greet — a relaxed first meeting, usually in a bar or café, with no expectations.
  • Chemistry — the reason most meetings do not go further. If it is not there, it is not there — and that is fine.
  • Limits / boundaries — what you will and will not do. Good profiles state them clearly.
  • Discreet — you do not want to be recognised, and you treat other people's privacy with care. Practically everyone in the scene expects this. Read our rules for staying discreet.

Why clear language helps

Most disappointments in the lifestyle come from misunderstandings: one couple says "soft swap" and means kissing, the other means much more. So use the terms, but also explain in a sentence what they mean for you. "Soft swap, same room only, no kissing with others" leaves no room for doubt. It also makes your first conversations easier — see our beginner's guide to etiquette and consent.

On SwingRoad you can describe in your profile what you are looking for, choose who may start a conversation with you and share private photos only with people you approve. Browse couples and singles in Leeds, Glasgow or Bristol.

Key points

  • "The lifestyle" covers swinging, open relationships and polyamory.
  • Soft swap, full swap, same room and separate rooms are levels, not steps you must climb.
  • Every couple defines the terms a little differently — always ask and say what you mean.
